Extreme events often happen suddenly and without warning. Stress can happen fast as in an automobile accident, a house fire, or a tornado. The stress affects people in different ways. The differences are unique to the person, but there are pattern similarities. When an event occurs that is outside of our usual routine, we are not sure what to do or how to respond to it. People cope with these events in many ways. No matter the coping skill, we want to find a way to return to a level of stress that we can tolerate. The second and more insidious stress process involves ongoing and unsolved conflicts. An ongoing court case, struggling in a bad marriage or a conflict with a coworker increases stress outside the tolerance level whenever you are exposed to that environment. The fact is that the stress does not stop. It continues each day that you have to go to work or when you return home. While you may adjust to the stress, frequently you will not recognize how damaging it was until you have fully escaped it. Stress affects three major areas of our lives. It affects our physical well-being, our sense of control, and our relationships. If suffered for a long period of time, stress can produce stomach, heart, or blood pressure problems. When stress affects our sense of control in the world, it can make us feel as if we are helpless and unable to cope. Stress can affect relationships with acquaintances, family, or close friends by nullifying our positive feelings, eliminating our desire to relate to others, and in some cases produces psychiatric disorders which makes long-term or overwhelming stress one of the most powerful and debilitating problems that a person can face. Treatments for stress problems are varied. A medical doctor may prescribe an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication. Other people advise exercise, home remedies, a shot of alcohol, or a vacation. While advice is well-meaning, it does little to permanently eliminate the stress. The Life Prescription Stress Workbook uses known and researched techniques to identify stress, and to improve coping strategies. Understanding how stress operates in your life, and recognizing your stress patterns are essential to giving you the tools for change. How to identify and change your pattern and relieve stress is the focus of The Life Prescription Stress Workbook. To take the free in-depth test simply click on the link above.
